The Royal British Legion is the UK's leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. Currently, nearly 13 million people are eligible for our support and we receive around 300,000 calls for help every year.
The Legion was founded in 1921 as a voice for the ex-Service community and our 550,000 members continue to ensure that this voice does not go unheard. Although the needs of ex-Service people have changed over the years, we are still there to safeguard their welfare, interests and memory. British service people are in action around the world every day of the year. They know that if they need our support - now or in the future - the Legion is always on active duty for them.
What We Do
The Royal British Legion is one of the country's leading ex-Service charities and largest membership organisations. We are probably best-known for our role as the nation's custodian of Remembrance and for the Poppy Appeal which we organise annually.
The Poppy Appeal
Each year the nation expresses its unequivocal support for our work through its generous support of the Poppy Appeal which raises almost half the £48 million which we spend on our welfare work each year.
Welfare and Benevolence
The Legion's mission is to safeguard the interests and welfare of ex-Service men and women and their dependants and there are now over 13 million people in the UK who are eligible for our help. Each year we spend more than £48 million answering their calls for help. The welfare assistance we provide ranges from pensions and benefits advice to employment and careers advice; from the provision of welfare grants to arranging pilgrimages to war graves and from home and hospital visits to the provision of full nursing care.
